“Building resilience for quality of Life”

Fitness and activity shouldn’t be a fleeting phase but should be a key pillar underpinning your mental and physical health and maximising your Quality of Life.

Injury. Illness and challenging life events needn’t be insurmountable barriers to restoring health, well-being, and resilience.  Let us help you build lifelong fitness.

At QOl we are passionate about the benefits of exercise throughout a whole lifetime. Exercise has the capacity to enrich quality of life in meaningful way. Inactive and sedentary lifestyles become self-fulfilling and the potential to enjoy all that life has to offer becomes diminished.

The short to medium term power of exercise to facilitate change is well known bringing benefits in body composition, weight loss, lower blood pressure, greater strength and improving appearance. Less immediately apparent is the value of exercise as a lifetime investment in your future health and quality of life.   I

It is not just the hours in the gym it is the years spent engaging in activity, moving freely, challenging mind and body. Lifelong benefits include improved co-ordination, reduced fall risk, strengthened bones and connective tissue and increased independence.

Increasingly exercise is being recognised as being essential for brain health. Improved cognition, better blood flow within the brain, reducing the likelihood of memory loss and dementia are tangible and important benefits.  Recent research even suggests that exercise may promote regeneration of nerve cells within the brain, protecting the brain from premature ageing.

Our goal is to help you put it all these elements together for vitality and health. Ageing well with greater quality of life is what we are all about.

Illness and Medical conditions

Illness or injury shouldn’t be an impediment to remaining active and enjoying the benefits of exercise. Many medical conditions will be helped by a well-constructed and properly supervised programme of exercise.  Increased physical resiliency is essential in negotiating many diseases and illnesses. Exercise can also enhance recovery post- surgery and give better long- term prognosis. Prevention of muscle wasting, maintenance of energy levels and better, safer less damaging movement patterns are important considerations.

Injury and Rehabilitation

Physical injury is probably the most common reason that active people stop exercising.  Pain, and dysfunction and can be significant barriers to activity.  Facilitating a successful and prompt return to exercise and daily activity should be a priority when considering overall health.  An experienced and knowledgeable rehab trainer is indispensable when returning from injury. A skilled trainer will provide a link between the end of medical care or physiotherapy and the resumption of normal activity or competitive sports.

It is essential to try to prevent injury occurring in the first instance. Training programmes should be designed to improve movement patterns and identify and address weak links. Progression should never be rushed at the expense of injury proofing a client.

While injuries will inevitably occur, a good trainer anticipates and identifies potential problems and develops strategies to facilitate pain-free movement and resilience.

Can Exercise Help My Mental Health?

According to the World Health Organization (WHO 2020) 15 randomised trials and 3 metanalyses showed that exercise could be as effective as cognitive therapy in reducing depression.

The short answer is yes. Exercise can be positive in several ways including improved cognitive function and intra-cranial blood flow and promoting better memory and sleep. Exercise can be an invaluable coping strategy in dealing with stress and preventing other health conditions like heart disease and arthritis that negatively impact on mental health. Physical activity can also boost your mood and improve confidence, providing opportunities to socialise and engage with people. Structured programmes of exercise have been shown to be effective in treating moderate depression.

Exercise with Confidence in Pregnancy

Pregnancy is probably the most significant change that the female body will go through.  The movement and energetic demands that pregnancy brings are huge. Being fit, healthy, strong, and resilient is extremely important.

Exercise during pregnancy brings specific and unique challenges.  Ensuring training is enjoyable, effective and most of all safe should always be the aim.  Exceptional levels of fitness can still be achieved. We can provide experienced coaching and advise at every stage of your pregnancy.
