Smart companies know that the health and resilience of their workforce is paramount. There are many benefits arising from prioritising mental and physical well-being in the workplace.

According to Public Health England (2019) 28.2 million workdays are lost per year due to musculoskeletal injuries and 14.3 million days are lost because of stress, depression and anxiety. Innovative and integrated programmes of physical activity, health focused education and mental well-being can significantly impact workplace absences when they are embedded into the culture of an organisation.

An EU Erasmus+ funded programme carried out by Sport4Health Network (Todorovic et al. BMC Proceedings 2020) found that a work place resistance training programme favourably affected musculoskeletal disorders, work performance and health-related quality of life in employees who exercised at least 3 times per week for over 8 weeks.

Programmes of resistance training in the workplace have been shown to bring benefits for employees in terms of reducing musculoskeletal pain, work performance and health-related quality of life (lower BMI and lower Blood Pressure)

CASE STUDY

Background

Cortida is an information and cyber security consultancy that helps organisations of all sizes to identify, understand and mitigate security risks while also helping to navigate attacks when they occur.

www.cortida.com

Problem

Mindful of the high stress environment, Cortida wanted to ensure its team of employees and associates were as physically and mentally well as possible and had access to skilled health experts.  The hope being that specialist advisors could design and guide appropriate exercise activities for the team while helping them adopt strategies for managing stress and improving sleep and nutrition. Given the erratic nature of cyber-attacks it was also important to make these services available in flexible time slots and through mediums that also supported a somewhat mobile workforce.

Solution

Based upon previous recommendations and personal experience, Cortida invited QOL Training to prepare a plan that would support the team through a business funded initiative. The plan needed to be mindful of the varying ages and abilities of the team and be flexible enough to meet the frequently changing availability and geographic locations of workers, who were often travelling. Affordability was also a key criterion for the business.

John created a flexible plan of times that could be shared across the team on a weekly basis up to an agreed cost threshold. The sessions which were typically 30-60 minutes, were available to use for in person or remote guided exercise and general health, nutrition or mental wellbeing discussions where personal strategies could be developed. Although the sessions were largely one to one, for some of the team joint sessions were a preference and again John was able to provide small group sessions.

Results

The team are looking healthier and happier with a greater resilience to the pressures of the job. For the team, John has become an essential supporter and even attends and contributes at our periodic ‘all hands meetings where the team are confident, they can receive personalised, and professional advice on a wide range of health and well-being matters.

I’d thoroughly recommend John and QOL Training for any organisation wishing to support their employees to improve health and well-being and to better navigate workplace stress.
